Roman brides wore a flame-coloured veil. Brides across North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia wear henna. Japanese brides wear white. Victorian England contributed a dress and a widely reproduced picture of it. The four work by different logics, and flattening them into a single human impulse loses all of it.

In Rome, in Ottoman Sofia and Adrianople and in nineteenth-century Cairo, the bath was where the body was prepared: plucked, scrubbed, depilated and dressed, and for women a social world of its own. In Victorian London it returned as a health cure, with a much smaller door for women.
Bernardino of Siena in Rome in 1424 and Girolamo Savonarola in Florence in 1497 and 1498 turned the renunciation of adornment into a public ritual, with a built pyre, a procession and a fire. The lists of what burned are also lists of what people owned, and they name mirrors, scents and false hair far more readily than paint.
The modern face is applied in a fixed order that feels inherited and is not. Two of its five steps arrive with patent numbers, the step that now comes first has no clean founding date at all, and only the powder is genuinely old.
Chinese writing on the toilette ran on two tracks: admonition that set the face against the character, and poetry that lingered over the mirror, the brush and the delay. Between them sit the objects: a Tang figure of a woman with her mirror, made for a tomb, a silver box for rouge, and a mirror stand shaped as a beast gazing at the moon.
Juvenal mocked the Roman wife whose face was swollen under a poultice at home and washed clean for her lover; an American manual of 1874 prescribed a wet cotton mask every night for six weeks; since 2020 the same idea has spread online as slugging. The night mask is the private half of the toilette.
In kabuki the face is a code, painted in fixed patterns that tell the audience who a character is before a word is spoken. In the Western theatre, brighter lighting forced a change from powder to greasepaint, sold from 1873 in numbered sticks. Both turned making up in the dressing room into a ritual of its own.
The European dressing ritual took its name from a cloth on a table and grew into a semi-public reception. Its tools survive in silver, its rules survive in satire, and one of its most repeated facts never happened.
