When you follow a product link from this site and buy something, we may receive a commission from the retailer at no additional cost to you.

Which links these are

Commercial links appear only where a product is part of the subject — in the shop rail at the foot of an article, in the "achieve this look" panels, and on brand and product pages. They are labelled, and every section containing one carries this disclosure at the point of use rather than only on this page.

Links inside article prose to sources, museums, archives and other reference material are never affiliate links.

What it does not change

• Nothing is written because it can be sold. Articles are commissioned from the history, and the products that appear are the ones that belong to the story being told.
• A product's inclusion is not conditional on a commission. Discontinued products, products with no affiliate arrangement and products we cannot link at all appear here whenever they are the right answer. Where no link exists, the product is simply described.
• No brand pays for placement, and none reviews copy before publication.

How the links work

Product links on this site point at our own address first (/go/…) and redirect to the retailer. That redirect adds the affiliate tag and records that the click happened — which link, the page it was on, and the day. It records the click, not you: no profile is built and nothing identifying is stored. If you have accepted Google Analytics, the click is also counted there, by product, brand, shop and page. Amazon links currently go to Amazon.com, the US store, wherever you are reading from. Prices, delivery and availability are set there and may differ from your local Amazon.

Prices

This site does not display prices. Prices change constantly and a stale one is misleading; Amazon's own terms also forbid displaying an API-retrieved price beyond a short window. The price you see at the retailer is the price, and it is the only one we will ever show you.

Product imagery

The pictures of products on this site are not photographs of them. Each is our own illustration of the kind of product — a lipstick, a cushion compact, a brow pencil — made for this site with AI, like the rest of its commissioned illustration (see Editorial Standards). It carries our own mark, never a brand's name, packaging or shade, because a made-up picture of the exact thing a reader is about to buy would be a fabrication of the thing itself. On a product's own page the picture is captioned as an illustration, not a photograph of the product; on the product cards in looks, rails, grids and Vivien's picks it is marked "Illustration", and its description for screen readers says so too.
